  • Ali Nail sets out on his horse from Rumelikavağı to Kilyos to help the fishermen affected by the storm in the Black Sea. When darkness falls, he gets lost and begins to see silhouettes on deserted paths that he cannot identify. Meanwhile, he sees his girlfriend Meliha, who is floating like a spirit, follows her and faints by falling off the cliff. When he wakes up, he sees an old man at his bedside... Rumor has it that the Count of Sen Jermen, who found the philosopher's stone and the secret of immortality, secretly came to Istanbul during the time of Sultan Mahmud I and disappeared again by teaching this secret to someone. Thus, Canvermezler, who have been living their lives for centuries by transferring people's lives into their own bodies with some supernatural techniques, emerges. There is no one who knows the Canvermezler, who live far from society and wandering, but survives. The only exception is Ali Nail, who bequeathed what he went through to warn humanity. However, it is unknown whether he is the living one or his ghost. Canvermezler Lodge, which was published in İleri newspaper in 1921 by Selim Nüzhet Gerçek, under the pen name Ahmet Kamil, adapting it from Claude Farrere's work La Maison des Hommes Vivants, and then compiled into a book in 1922, is considered the first gothic novel of our literature with its mysterious events, supernatural characters and mystical chills it gives to the reader. Selim Nüzhet Gerçek (1891-1945) Selim Nüzhet, son of journalist, publisher and educator Mahmut Celalettin Bey and brother of Abdülhak Şinasi Hisar, was born in Istanbul. After completing primary school at Gaziosmanpaşa Primary School in Rumelihisarı, he graduated from Galatasaray Mekteb-i Sultanisi Turkish Department (1910). He graduated from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Geneva in Switzerland. Due to the start of World War I, he could not return home until 1921. During this period, he dealt with the Turks deported from France, England and Italy. After returning home, he worked as a translator for Yarın magazine and İleri newspaper and started writing articles and serializing novels. He was assigned to stage plays in Darülbedayi for a while. After the proclamation of the Republic, he left journalism and taught Turkish and history at Robert College for about ten years. By the order of Atatürk, he was appointed to the Printing Writing and Pictures Compilation Directorate, which was established in 1934, and worked there until his death. Selim Nüzhet, who took the surname Gerçek due to his sympathy for Gerçek Davut Ağa, who founded the Istanbul Fire Brigade, wrote articles in various newspapers and magazines such as Milliyet, Yeni Türk Mecmuası, Cumhuriyet, Yedigün, Yücel, Perde ve Sahne, Akşam, İstanbul and Ulus. In addition, Selim Nüzhet, who conducted research and wrote works on Turkish printing history, theater history, journalistic history, and Turkish Bibliography, also wrote three novels, Canvermezler Lodge, Gazanfer Pasha's Second and Sacrifice to Unknown Forces.
