Meslek ve sosyal sınıf farkı gözetmeyen bu illet, arzularına kavuşsalar da Çehov karakterlerinin yakasını bırakmaz. Zira o zaman da, mutluluktan uçma hissi bir süre sonra yerini hayatın sıradanlığının yol açtığı bir daralmaya, hoşnutsuzluğa ve doyumsuzluğa bırakır.1903'te Jurnal Dlya Vseh dergisinde yayımlanan Nişanlı, Çehov'un tamamladığı son öyküsüdür. Bir genç kızın aşksız bir evlilikten, işlevsiz bir hayattan kaçıp bağımsızlığını elde edişini anlattığı bu yapıtında, Çehov ülkesinin sırtında taşıdığı aylak ve yararsız insanlara sert bir eleştiri yöneltirken, 20. yüzyıl başında Rus toplumunun kadın özgürleşmesinde geldiği noktaya da dikkat çeker. 1894 yılında Russkiye Vedomosti gazetesinde yayımlanan ve aynı yıl Novellalar ve Öyküler başlıklı derlemeye dahil edilen Edebiyat Öğretmeni ise bir lisede öğretmenlik yapan genç Nikitin'in öyküsüdür.
