I assume the conditioner prevents the dye from being taken up into the hair. The product tends to dye skin around the hair so you likely will need to take a wash cloth you don't care about, get it wet and add some shampoo to it, then go over and over the skin that has dye residue on it. Eventually it will come off. In the really stubborn stray dye cases I've experienced (rarely) I've taken a paper towel, wetted it, wrung it out, added a little laundry bleach, and gently wiped the area. This is not for everyone, be careful, and you didn't hear it from me :) Lastly, you should rinse your hair out in a porcelain sink or tub if possible. It may stain acrylic, requiring bleach or special remover to take it out. This is a DARK dye. Use gloves as well.

If your hair is extremely dirty and/or has a lot of other product on it, I would definitely wash first. However, I use little to no applied products, so I have applied to my hair as is. Either way, I've not seen a difference. Just 5 color really does not take long to process. I have a lot of hair, so it takes me more than 5 minutes to apply. But I start where I have the most gray. so by the time I've completed adding the color, my hair is ready to rinse the color and shampoo.
